Child Fatality Review Team (CFRT)
Public Health believes it takes a community working together to ensure that children survive and thrive in Tarrant County.
The Child Fatality Review Team is a forum that brings community agencies and community members together to discuss social, economic, cultural, safety and health systems factors associated with fetal and infant mortality.
CFRT is modeled after programs established by the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention.
Goal
The CFRT aims to identify the risk factors involved in a child’s death to better understand how and why children are dying, then use those findings to prevent other child deaths.
Background
The Tarrant County Child Fatality Review Team (CFRT) was established in 1995 and housed within the Medical Examiners Office. The team was transferred to Public Health in 2016. There are Child Fatality Review programs in every state, the District of Columbia, and several Native American/Alaska Native tribes.
Since 1995, the CFRT has reviewed over 1500 cases. CFRT would not be possible without a multidisciplinary review team and participation from our local partners. CFRT also has a close relationship with SafeKids North Texas, working to prevent child fatalities.

Data & Reporting
Findings from reviews and recommendations are submitted to the state biannually and then reported up to the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention.
