Family Service Inc. Collection

Summary: Family Service, Inc. was a volunteer agency, started in 1941, which focused on family counseling services and informative referrals for financial services. It was originally known as the Family Service Association, and it became a United Way agency in 1942. Georgia Gunkle served as Executive Director from the mid-1950s through 1966, and she helped the agency receive accreditation from the Family Service Association of America. Richard Bennett expanded services to include drug counseling and the homemaker program. Bennett also opened an Arlington Counseling office. Family Service added a 24-hour crisis hotline in the 1970s. The Hospice Program started in 1981. The organization closed on March 31, 2002, citing financial difficulties.
