What is the Freshman 15?

The "Freshman 15" is a moniker for the phenomenon of weight gain experienced by college students during their first year away from home. Recent studies have revealed a move in the right direction -- today’s average college or university freshman gains five pounds as opposed to the 15 that was gained by students decades ago.

 

The causes of the Freshman 15 include:

  • Eating unhealthy foods, usually fast food
  • Eating late at night
  • Drinking excessive amounts of empty calories, soft drinks, alcohol and sports drinks
  • Limiting exercise


Ways to prevent the Freshman 15 include:

  • Choose healthy foods, eat the My Plate Way
  • Stock up on healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables and nuts that won't pack on the pounds
  • Avoid stress eating and late-night eating
  • Drink plenty of water and limit sugared beverages and alcohol
  • Watch portion sizes, since even healthy foods have calories
  • Increase exercise by walking to classes, or simply playing sports with friends
