Clerkships, Externships, and Internships are not available for high school students.
Medical Student Clerkships and Externships
30-day clerkships or externships are available for third and fourth year medical school students, and are offered up to six times a year. Externs are selected based upon their application and educational desires with consideration of the medical examiner office's needs and availability of supervisory staff to accomodate the request.
Internships and other volunteer opportunities are available for current undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a collegiate academic program such as biology, chemistry, forensic science, or other related fields of study leading to a degree minor or major. Only a few students are selected annually, through a competitive process, for the internship and volunteer programs. As with the medical student externships, successful applicants are selected based upon their application and educational desires with consideration of the medical examiner office's needs and availability of supervisory staff to accomodate the request. Additional considerations may include program requirements for internships, academic excellence, demonstrated interest and knowledge in forensic science, personal maturity, previous work experience and skills, and anticipated mutual benefits for the applicant and the medical examiner's office.
