What happens at the detention hearing?

Detention hearings are conducted by judges. At this hearing, the judge must decide whether to continue detaining the youth or whether the law violation can be safely and effectively resolved if the youth goes home in the meantime. The judge may decide to release the youth  from detention and monitor his/her actions through an alternative form of supervision, such as electronically monitored home detention or community-based detention. A youth may request a detention hearing at any time.
