A chronic condition or disease can develop at any age, and usually will progress and worsen over time.

The majority of chronic diseases are linked to identified risk behaviors and/or environmental factors; however, genetics or family history can also influence the development of some chronic conditions as well. Unlike communicable diseases, these conditions are not spread from person to person.

Studies show that once someone develops a chronic condition, they often have it for the rest of their lives. And although there is no cure for chronic disease, often treatments are available to help manage symptoms, control disease progression and prevent or slow related complications.

With proper knowledge, appropriate medical care and lifestyle change, some conditions –if addressed early enough-- can be well managed and never fully develop into a chronic condition, making a healthy life possible.
