Administrative personnel oversee the operation of the Medical Examiner’s Office and manage quality control and assurance processes.

Medical examiners are specially trained physicians, with extensive experience in pathology, toxicology, histology and other medicolegal sciences, who conduct forensic examinations to establish and certify a decedent’s cause and manner of death.

Forensic death investigators are trained in a multi-disciplinary capacity and possess unique education and abilities, including knowledge of effective investigation and interview techniques, forensic medicine, crime scene processing, and case integrity while also being capable of locating and notifying next-of-kin, and interacting with staff from other entities.

Each piece of evidence involving the Medical Examiner’s Office is coupled with a chain-of-custody and handled, cared for and stored properly using technicians with expertise in evidentiary preservation.  The morgue area employs a design that centralizes all morgue activity to provide an efficient workflow.

Forensic toxicology and chemistry services assist medical examiners in determining the cause and manner of death by isolating, identifying and determining the level of chemicals in specimens through the techniques of mass spectrometry, gas chromatography and high-pressure liquid chromatography analysis.

Specialized sections of the crime laboratory identify, analyze and report on various forms of evidence such as DNA, blood spatter, trace materials, chemical compounds, firearms, tool marks and latent fingerprints.

Unidentified remains are examined systematically using fingerprints, dental records, anthropological studies, and DNA technology, while also making use of local, state and national databases, in an effort to provide a positive identity of a decedent and closure to the decedent’s family.

The radiology lab incorporates a C-arm fluoroscope, fixed flat-plate device and articulated dental radiography equipment to assist the pathologists and other staff in examining and identifying a decedent.

Special stains and fixation methods are applied to tissue samples in order to assist the physicians in identifying natural disease processes and certain tissue changes that occur in response to trauma or lifestyle habits.

The business office supports the financial aspects of the office (e.g., budget preparation and fiscal reporting, accounts payable and receivable, personnel matters and other related issues.
