Tarrant County Public Health Awarded National Accreditation

November 23, 2015 (Tarrant County, TX) – Tarrant County Public Health (TCPH) has been awarded the coveted national accreditation status from the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB).

Serving a county population of nearly 1.9 million residents, TCPH is the first nationally accredited health department in the DFW Metroplex, and only the second in the state - behind the City of Houston.

By obtaining national accreditation status, TCPH is now one of the first 100 accredited public health departments in the nation, and among the top three percent of all public health departments nationally.

TCPH provides services aimed at promoting, achieving and maintaining a healthy standard of living to all Tarrant County residents. The department has a dedicated staff of approximately 400 public health professionals and annual funding resources totaling approximately $60 million.

“We are honored to receive this national distinction. Our health department underwent a rigorous two-year, peer-review assessment process to ensure we exceed a set of quality standards and measures,” says TCPH Health Director Vinny Taneja. “As excited as we are, we know the real winner is the community we serve.”

PHAB conducted a formal site visit in late April 2015. During their time, they visited with key TCPH staff to review critical documentation, and assess operations and performance. PHAB representatives also met with community stakeholders from across the county.

“Receiving this prestigious national accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board is a great honor; and is both validation and recognition of the outstanding level of service provided to the citizens of Tarrant County, and to this region by the Tarrant County Public Health Department,” says Precinct 1 Commissioner Roy Charles Brooks. “Credit for this outstanding recognition goes to the staff of Tarrant County Public Health, including Health Director Dr. Vinny Taneja.  They work tirelessly and meticulously every day to ensure their programs are correct, their procedures are sound and their practices are evidence based.  Hats off to all! Once again, Tarrant County leads the way!”

The PHAB national accreditation program, supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, sets standards against which the nation’s more than 3,000 public health departments can continuously improve services and performance. Accreditation standards define the expectations for all public health departments that seek to become accredited. National public health department accreditation has been developed because of the desire to improve service, value, and accountability to stakeholders.
