National Health Report Highlights Progress in Tarrant County

November 18, 2015 (Tarrant County, TX) – Tarrant County has made progress in improving health outcomes, according to a new Big Cities Health Coalition (BCHC) national report released today called the Big Cities Health Inventory (BCHI).

The report offers data and insights on the state of health in Tarrant County, and updates a previous edition of the report issued in 2007.

According to the BCHC report, Tarrant County has met nine national healthy living goals, which benchmark progress on important health measures each decade. Some targets include:

    • Decreasing the diabetes death rate – Tarrant County at 23 per 100,000 population. Goal is 67.
    • Increasing adult physical activity – 48 percent of adult population meets requirement. Goal is 48 percent.
    • Reducing adult obesity – 29 percent of adult population meets requirement. Goal is 31 percent.

Despite progress, challenges still remain. While the county’s heart disease mortality rate has been cut in half since 2007 (356 per 100,000 to 178.9 per 100,000), it is still almost 70 percent higher than the national average (105.4 per 100,000).

“Tarrant County is making good progress towards its healthy goals and it’s reflected in the Big Cities Health Inventory report,” says TCPH Health Director Vinny Taneja. “There’s still a lot of work to do throughout the county, so let’s do it.”

You can view a city snapshot of Tarrant County’s health outcomes. The BCHC Health Inventory platform also allows for more in depth exploration of 26 “Big Cities’” health data, which you can download or use online.
