    Public Health to Celebrate National County Government Month in April


    (Tarrant County, Texas) . Tarrant County Public Health will celebrate National County Government Month during the month of April to highlight some of its programs, services and activities for Tarrant County residents. The theme for this year's County Government Month celebration is "Healthy Counties, Healthy Families." National County Government Month is sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo).

    Featured events will include a Tarrant County Commissioners Court recognition on April 10 of the winning artwork from the annual Public Health Week Poster Contest for National Public Health Week (April 2 - 8), and an Earth Day Celebration on April 19.

    "National County Government Month provides a great opportunity for us to invite more people to take a closer look at all Tarrant County activities and services that promote, safety, health and well-being," said Tarrant County Judge B. Glen Whitley.

    Some of public health's services include:

    Low-cost immunizations and screenings

    Ongoing disease surveillance

    Travel Health services

    North Texas Regional Laboratory

    Tuberculosis and sexually transmitted disease education, prevention and control

    Food safety training and food establishment inspections

    Ongoing classes andamp; events to help empower individuals with chronic diseases

    Live A More Colorful Life! (nutrition education program)

    Regional HIV administrative and planning services

    Tarrant County Medical Reserve Corps (trains volunteers to aid in community emergencies)

    Speaker's Bureau (provides experts on a variety of health topics)

    Nurse-Family Partnership (matches experienced nurses with first-time mothers)

    Fathers to Dads Program (promotes mentoring for first-time fathers)

    Prescription Discount Card Program participant

    Public health also provides information through the Network of Care Web site

    Since 1991 NACo has encouraged counties across the country to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of counties.
