    Vinny Taneja receiving flu shot

We are now moving toward the time of the year when the flu season starts to peak. According to our surveillance efforts, there are a lot of flu-like illnesses going around. So practicing good hygiene will help you stay healthy. That means washing your hands regularly, using your sleeve (instead of your hands) to cover coughs and sneezes, keeping a healthy distance from those who are sick and staying home from work or school if you are sick.

But the best protection from the flu itself is getting a flu shot BEFORE you get sick. Be advised that it takes about two weeks for the flu vaccine to become fully effective once it's inside your body.

We offer low-cost flu vaccine at our public health clinics. Flu shots are also available at most local pharmacies. It doesn't matter where you get one as long as you get one soon.

And to help you weather the season as more cold weather comes on us, we recommend these personal safety tips and home safety tips for those times when local temperatures remain low for several consecutive days.

Have a healthy and happy New Year!

    Sincerely,

    Veerinder (Vinny) Taneja
