    Dear Tarrant County Residents,

You may have heard in recent media reports that a person with Measles traveled back from India into Tarrant County on January 6.

The person traveled by plane and later had contact with family members, as well as people in the community during a visit to the doctor’s office.

From this situation, TCPH staff interviewed several potential contacts from the plane, the person’s family and community.

Three individuals didn’t have an appropriate history of immunizations to measles. These individuals were then educated about measles and its prevention. TCPH staff monitored these individuals via phone for development of any symptoms. Today, all three individuals have completed their monitoring and all are well.

However, there is a major lesson to be learned from this completely avoidable situation. If all these individuals had taken their immunizations against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), we wouldn’t be worrying about this.

I encourage all Tarrant County residents to consult a travel health clinic before foreign travel to address their health needs. There are several entities that offer such service. TCPH has a Travel Health Clinic at our Main location in Fort Worth. We also offer the service in Arlington and Southlake. The number to call is 817-321-4707 for Travel Health information.

    Sincerely,

    Veerinder (Vinny) Taneja

    Public Health Director
