Texas Bar Foundation grant funds waiting room monitors

Tarrant County’s IV-D Courts will soon have the ability to play pre-recorded information about the community resources available to parents waiting to be called into court as a result of a grant from the Texas Bar Foundation.

The IV-D Courts were created in response to the federal requirement that states create expedited administrative or judicial processes to resolve child support cases, including services relating to the location of an absent parent, determination of parentage, and/or establishment, modification, or enforcement of a child support or medical support obligation.

The $4,278 grant will be used to purchase television monitors, DVD players and dry erase boards that will be placed in the IV-D waiting rooms.  The Domestic Relations Office (DRO) is partnering with Fort Worth Library and the Fort Worth Public Library Foundation as well as other community partners to provide information about community resources that are available to families in Tarrant County.

About 200 people are called to the courts each day and may wait from two to six hours until their cases are called.  Many of the parents are in the court because they are unemployed or underemployed and thus not paying child support, or – in the case of custodial parents – unable to provide as well as they should for their children.

The DRO saw the opportunity to reach this ready-made audience with the information they can use to help themselves and their children.  The monitors and equipment should be installed by the spring of 2017.

Since its inception in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded more than $16 million in grants to law-related programs.  Supported by the members of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation is the nation’s largest charitably funded bar foundation.
