    Prostate Cancer Screening Awareness

Each year, approximately 200,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States. Prostate cancer is known as the “silent killer” because men do not exhibit symptoms until it is too late. Among African American men, prostate cancer is the leading cancer killer. Men of color have the highest rate of cancer and are twice as likely to die from the disease. However, through early detection, men have a higher percentage of survival. Early diagnosis gives all men nearly a 98.9 percent chance for survival.

It is for these reasons that Commissioner Brooks has taken this initiative head-on by annually sponsoring the Tarrant County – Precinct One Prostate Cancer Screening Event. The purpose of the event is to provide men with free prostate cancer screenings as well as provide men and their families educational support through increased awareness. As a result of this year’s event, we are excited to report an attendance of over 120 participants with 106 men taking advantage of the opportunity to be screened. No man should die from prostate cancer.

    Alzheimer Education Series

Commissioner Roy Charles Brooks has been on the forefront of addressing health disparities across Tarrant County as well as on a national level. He has been an advocate for health-related issues that not only focus on the body but on the mind as well. In addition to the Healthy Lives Matter initiative that was established in 2014 with a primary focus on prostate cancer, Commissioner Brooks has introduced the Healthy Lives Matter Alzheimer’s Education Series. This new education series will provide participants with educational sessions, health services and resources which will increase awareness and become a trailblazer to new and improved service outlets.
