As of March 1, 2015, your vehicle will no longer be issued an inspection sticker, and your registration sticker will serve as combined proof of inspection and registration.

How it works:

STEP 1:  Obtain a passing vehicle inspection. To find your nearest inspection station, please visit the DPS website.

STEP 2:  Renew your annual registration online, by mail or in person at one of our eight locations.  At the time of registration, your inspection status will be verified electronically.  A current, passing inspection is required for registration renewal.

You will have a 90-day window to complete both your inspection and registration.  Remember, your registration is valid through the last day of the registration expiration month.  You can find your inspection window with a specially designed calculator at twostepsonesticker.com.

Fees:

Your inspection fee is the same, but you will pay it in two steps.

1.    The inspection station's portion of the fee will be due at the time of inspection.

2.    The state's portion of the fee will be collected at the time of registration.  The state's portion of the inspection fees will be line-itemed on your registration renewal notice.

Registration Renewal Process:

Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) will check the state inspection records for your last inspection before issuing a registration renewal notice.

  • If your inspection record cannot be found, is expired or failing, you will not receive a registration renewal notice.  Instead, TxDMV will send you an Inspection and Registration Notice informing you that no record could be located.  The notice will remind you that an inspection must be completed in order to renew your vehicle.
  • If an inspection record is found, a registration renewal notice will be mailed to you.

Once you receive a registration renewal notice, you may choose one of the renewal methods below:

Online:  You will be able to renew your online renewal and your new registration sticker will be mailed to you.

By Mail:  You may mail your registration renewal notice, proof of insurance and verification of inspection to the address on your registration renewal notice. If you have moved to a different county than what is shown on your renewal notice, mail to the new county.  To search for your county's address, navigate to the "Find Your Local Tax Office & DMV" box at https://www.txdmv.gov/ and enter the County Name.  Your search results will show the county's information followed by the TxDMV's Regional Service Center information.

In Drop Box:  Registration Renewals may be dropped in any available secure drop box at Tax Office locations that offer one.  To find out where there is a drop box at your preferred location and the whether it is available 24/7 or during business hours, visit the locations page. Include the renewal notice if available, check or money order (no cash or cards), copy of identification, and your phone number and/or email address.  Checks are made payable to Wendy Burgess.

In Person at Grocery Stores:  You may renew your registration if you received your renewal notice.  You must present the renewal notice,  current passing Vehicle Inspection Report you received from the inspection station, and acceptable form of identification at the time of renewal.  Please note:  Grocery store locations issue stickers only.  For a list of partnering stores, visit the Other Renewal Locations page on our website.

In Person:  You may come in to any of our eight locations to renew your registration in person.  Bring your proof of insurance, registration renewal notice if you have it, and an acceptable form of ID.  Your inspection will be verified electronically. Please note:  most inspection records will be available in real time, but there may be instances when the record is not immediately available.  You may present the current, passing Vehicle Inspection Report you received from the inspection station at the time of renewal.  The report will be verified manually and you will be permitted to renew your vehicle registration.
