Commissioners Court Unanimously Supports Consent to the Initial
Resettlement of Refugees in Tarrant County
On Tuesday, our Commissioners Court took decisive action by unanimously supporting the consent to the initial resettlement of refugees in Tarrant County. This action authorizes the County Judge to send a letter of consent on to the federal government, in the hopes that should Governor Abbott’s recently announced decision excluding our state’s participation in the refugee resettlement program this fiscal year be reversed, we are still taking the necessary steps to care for refugees in our county.
Tarrant County has long since welcomed refugees and stands as one of the top counties in Texas to accept and resettle refugees. I am honored to represent Precinct 2, which has a significant refugee population that not only adds valued diversity but also meaningful contributions to our economy that make our county that much stronger. A study by the New American Economy found that Refugees in Texas had a, “combined spending power of $4.6 billion and paid a total of $1.6 billion in taxes,” in 2015.
This past year we’ve heard much discussion on immigration, reform of a broken system and its effects on the immigrant and greater community. When speaking about this issue many individuals shared they welcomed “legal immigration.” Refugees are legal immigrants, fleeing war and persecution, who are fully vetted by the Federal government and furthermore don’t get to choose their location of resettlement. Unfortunately, state leadership appears to have made a purely political decision at the risk of re-traumatizing refugees. Refugee resettlement is a part of our immigration system that works.
In order for Tarrant County to remain and grow as inclusive and welcoming county we must keep the doors open to those fleeing conflict and seeking refuge.
I am proud of our Court’s action regarding the consent to initial resettlement. We have long been equipped to support refugees and their successful integration into life in the Tarrant County community.
